În luna a șasea, îngerul Gabriel a fost trimis de Dumnezeu într-o cetate din Galileea, numită Nazaret, la o fecioară logodită cu un bărbat al cărui nume era Iosif, din casa lui David. Numele fecioarei era Maria. Îngerul a intrat la ea și i-a zis: – Plecăciune, ție căreia ți s-a arătat bunăvoință! Domnul este cu tine! (Binecuvântată ești tu între femei!) Ea a fost foarte tulburată de mesajul îngerului și se gândea ce ar putea să însemne salutul acesta. Îngerul i-a zis: – Nu te teme, Maria, pentru că ai găsit har din partea lui Dumnezeu! Iată că vei rămâne însărcinată și vei naște un Fiu, Căruia Îi vei pune numele Isus. El va fi mare și va fi numit „Fiul Celui Preaînalt“, iar Domnul Dumnezeu Îi va da tronul strămoșului Său, David. Va împărăți peste casa lui Iacov în veci și Împărăția Lui nu va avea sfârșit! Maria l-a întrebat pe înger: – Cum se va întâmpla lucrul acesta de vreme ce eu nu știu de bărbat? Îngerul i-a răspuns: – Duhul Sfânt Se va coborî peste tine și puterea Celui Preaînalt te va umbri! De aceea Sfântul Care se va naște va fi numit „Fiul lui Dumnezeu“. Iată că Elisabeta, ruda ta, a conceput și ea un fiu, la bătrânețe; și ea, care era numită stearpă, este acum în luna a șasea! Căci nimic nu este imposibil cu Dumnezeu. Maria a zis: – Iată-mă, sunt sclava Domnului! Facă-mi-se după cuvântul tău! Și îngerul a plecat de la ea. În zilele acelea, Maria s-a sculat și s-a dus în grabă spre regiunea muntoasă, într-o cetate a lui Iuda. Ea a intrat în casa lui Zaharia și a salutat-o pe Elisabeta. Când Elisabeta a auzit salutul Mariei, copilul a săltat în pântecele ei, și Elisabeta a fost umplută de Duhul Sfânt. Ea a exclamat cu glas tare: „Binecuvântată ești tu între femei și binecuvântat este rodul pântecelui tău! Cum de mi-a fost dat să vină la mine mama Domnului meu?! Căci iată, de îndată ce am auzit salutul tău, mi-a săltat copilul în pântece de bucurie! Ferice de cea care a crezut că vor fi împlinite lucrurile care i-au fost spuse de Domnul!“
In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
În zilele acelea, a ieșit un decret de la Cezar Augustus să se înscrie toată lumea. Acest recensământ s-a făcut pentru prima oară în timp ce în Siria era guvernator Quirinius. Iată care va fi semnul pentru voi: veți găsi un Copil nou-născut, înfășat și culcat într-o iesle.“ Și deodată, împreună cu îngerul s-a unit o mulțime de oaste cerească, lăudându-L pe Dumnezeu și zicând: „Slavă lui Dumnezeu în înălțimi și pace pe pământ, între oamenii peste care se odihnește bunăvoința Lui!“ După ce îngerii s-au întors de la ei în ceruri, păstorii și-au zis unii altora: „Să mergem acum la Betleem și să vedem lucrul acesta care s-a întâmplat și pe care Domnul ni l-a făcut cunoscut!“ S-au dus repede și i-au găsit pe Maria, pe Iosif și Copilul culcat în iesle. Când i-au văzut, le-au făcut cunoscut ceea ce li se spusese despre Acest Copil. Toți cei ce i-au auzit, s-au mirat de ceea ce le-au spus păstorii. Maria, însă, păstra toate aceste cuvinte și cugeta la ele în inima ei. Apoi păstorii s-au întors slăvindu-L și lăudându-L pe Dumnezeu pentru toate lucrurile pe care le-au auzit și le-au văzut și care erau întocmai cum li se spusese. Când a venit ziua a opta, în care Copilul trebuia circumcis, I-au pus numele Isus, nume pe care îl spusese îngerul înainte ca El să fi fost conceput în pântece.
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.
După ce s-a născut Isus în Betleemul Iudeii, în zilele regelui Irod, iată că niște magi din Răsărit au venit la Ierusalim și au întrebat: „Unde este Împăratul Care li s-a născut de curând iudeilor? Căci I-am văzut steaua în Răsărit și am venit să ne închinăm Lui!“ Regele Irod s-a tulburat auzind acest lucru și, împreună cu el, s-a tulburat tot Ierusalimul. Apoi i-a trimis la Betleem, spunându-le: „Duceți-vă și cercetați cu atenție despre Copil, iar când Îl veți găsi, anunțați-mă și pe mine, ca să vin și eu să mă închin Lui!“ După ce l-au ascultat pe rege, magii au plecat. Și iată că steaua pe care o văzuseră în Răsărit a mers înaintea lor până când a ajuns și s-a oprit deasupra locului unde era Copilul. Ei s-au bucurat nespus de mult la vederea stelei. Când au intrat în casă și L-au văzut pe Copil împreună cu Maria, mama Lui, s-au prosternat închinându-se înaintea Lui, și-au deschis cuferele cu comori și I-au oferit daruri: aur, tămâie și smirnă. Apoi, fiind înștiințați de Dumnezeu în vis să nu se mai întoarcă pe la Irod, au pornit înapoi spre țara lor, pe un alt drum.
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: “ ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’ ” Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
